The truth is most therapy shows on TV get it wrong, just like the hospital ER is not full of hunky Dr. McDreamy's either. But it is interesting to step into the world of another profession, particularly one that is so closed to the public, like psychotherapy. If you've ever wondered what great therapy sounds like, you can find out! It's not uncommon for new clients to say, "I've never done this before," and if that describes you, this would be a great resource to get a feel for what therapists do.
So how can you do this? You can listen to Esther Perel's podcast series Where Should We Begin? on Audible.
Belgian born, Esther Perel is a psychotherapist in New York City. With some 30 years of experience, she became internationally renowned with the publication of her book Mating in Captivity where she explores the paradoxes between our need for autonomy and togetherness, security and novelty (it's a great read). Many also discovered her through her TED Talks that challenge our customary thinking on a variety of topics.
Perel's work on Where Should We Begin? is masterful and sublime. There is an art and a science to therapy, and she demonstrates both. With the consent of the anonymous couples on the podcast, the listener gets to hear poignant stories of love, loss, infidelity, sexlessness, coupling, parenting challenges, and much more. I savor this series, never binge listening, but taking it in session by session like a book I never want to end. Thankfully, she just wrapped her third season to be released in October. If you have an interest, check it out.
