For years I've had the sense that most of my clients improve, many in life-changing ways, but this year I decided to pull the data. I looked at how many couples I saw this year and how many reported significant improvement in their relationship or marriage. Keep in mind, I see couples contending with infidelity, high conflict, disconnection, sexless marriages, some on the brink of divorce. Sometimes clients have already separated and moved out only to find themselves reconciling after working in couples therapy with me. And of course, this work not only impacts the couple but the whole family system. If there are kids, improved marital/relational satisfaction impacts them, too.
If you are ready to work on yourself and gain a better understanding of your life, counseling can be a great tool to help you clarify your goals and solidify your direction. If you have experienced past wounds, counseling can help you heal and move forward in a positive direction. Additionally, if you are part of a couple and you want to improve your relationship, counseling can provide a supportive environment to help you both explore ways to create the relationship you crave.
In 2022, 96% of my clients who committed to therapy (minimum of 10 sessions) reported increased couple/marital satisfaction. This is an impressive statistic that demonstrates how effective therapy can be in improving relationships.
I knew my stats were good, but I'm so pleased with the actual findings. It reinforces why I stay passionate about this work. Also, it speaks to my clients' work and commitment to therapy and each other. Ones who have positive outcomes commit to the process and do the work in and outside of the therapy session.
It is also worth noting that some couples may face barriers to intimacy and connection that require individual attention before couples therapy can be effective. These barriers could be related to untreated mental health concerns, addiction, or continued infidelity. Addressing these individual issues can help to remove obstacles to healing, repair, and growth within the relationship.
Overall, therapy can be life-impacting and generational-impacting work. As a therapist, I am proud to have found my passion and to make a positive difference in the lives of my clients.
